New London County resident Dnazia Uzzle, age 17, of Groton, was found on Saturday, April 15, around 3 a.m. at a home in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Buchanan Road in New London.

According to New London Police Capt. Matthew Galante, when police arrived they found Uzzle unresponsive and transported her to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where she later died.

In addition to Uzzle, two other people were found at the scene with non-life-threatening stab wounds. They were also hospitalized, Galante said.

The Connecticut Medical Examinter's Office said the cause of Uzzle's death was sudden death during a physical altercation with neck compression and blunt injuries. It was ruled a homicide.

Following an investigation, on Thursday, Sept. 28, the two injured people, identified as Erica Cherry, age 40, and Nshon Cherry, age 19, both of New London, were charged in connection with the death, Galante added.

Both were taken into custody and charged with:

  • Accessory to commit manslaughter
  • Accessory to commit strangulation
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Assault
  • Cruelty to persons

They are being held for arraignment.
